Trauma

Trauma therapy in Maryland and Washington, DC

Trauma is not defined by the event alone. Abuse, loss, accidents, medical events, violence, or prolonged stress can leave effects that last long after the experience itself: intrusive memories, nightmares, feeling on guard or easily startled, avoiding reminders, feeling numb or detached, and changes in how a person sees themselves and other people. Sometimes the effects show up years later, in relationships, in mood, or in a persistent sense that something is still unresolved.

Trauma treatment is paced and collaborative. We begin by understanding what you are living with and building steadiness, so that you have skills for managing distress. When you are ready, we work directly with the memories and reminders that have been avoided, using trauma-focused methods alongside ACT and mindfulness-based skills.

Trauma has been the center of my clinical training. At Kennedy Krieger Institute I trained in the Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress.

I see adults and adolescents, and I work with younger children in the context of family treatment, where parents take part so that a child's recovery is supported at home.
