What therapy here looks like
Sessions are collaborative and flexible, with enough structure to make progress and enough openness to follow whatever comes up.
What to expect
Sessions begin with whatever is on your mind that day, and we follow where it leads. Early on, the work is exploratory, focused on the emotions underneath the challenges you describe and the story you tell about your life. I ask a fair number of questions, partly to understand what's going on and partly because saying something out loud, in detail, often clarifies it on its own.
I pay attention to patterns, including ones that connect something you mentioned weeks ago to what is coming up now. I also pay attention to what happens between us in the session. The way we relate in the room can act as a small version of how you relate to people in your everyday life, so noticing a feeling as it arises between us can open up insight into patterns outside the session.
As our work progresses, we identify the changes that matter most to you. We may bring in mindfulness-based techniques, or try out at-home "experiments" and then reflect on them together. A major ingredient of a full and content life is the ability to approach what comes up flexibly, so our sessions stay flexible too.
Who I see
I work with adults, adolescents ages 13+, and families, individually or together, via secure telehealth, serving clients in Maryland and Washington, DC, and expats living abroad.
