Therapy for anxiety in Maryland and Washington, DC
Anxiety can show up as constant worry, a racing mind, tension in the body, trouble sleeping, or avoiding things that matter to you. Some people function well on the outside and feel strained on the inside. Others find that anxiety has gradually narrowed what they do.
My approach to anxiety treatment uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and exposure-based techniques, together with insight-oriented and mindfulness-based methods. Rather than trying to eliminate anxious thoughts and feelings, we look at how you relate to them, what they have been steering you away from, and what you would be doing if they had less hold over your choices. When it fits, we work directly and gradually with the situations and sensations you have been avoiding, at a pace we agree on together.
I see adults and adolescents, and I work with younger children in the context of family treatment, with parents taking part in sessions. If your difficulty is mainly obsessions and compulsions, see therapy for OCD.
